I don't really like the newer Sesame Street. It's not that they've changed so many things- I accept that. It's more because Sesame has strayed a little from the things that made it great. It seems more entertaining than educational, and it seems to skew slightly older. the sketches are long enough to bore me, and my autistic son has no time for them whatsoever. It's also less entertaining for adults. My kids have been growing up on the old school Sesame Street episodes on DVD, and I've enjoyed rewatching them with my kids. I did at first, anyway.  Now I've seen them so many times I want to shoot myself. I've particularly enjoyed watching some of the cameos and performances by old celebrities.

I'm not a terribly sentimental person- or at least I like to think I'm not. These two clips from the old school Sesame Street episodes I've been watching with my kids get me a little verklemmt. When I watch my son watch them, or when I think of my son when I watch them, the whole endeavor of raising my kids takes on a new importance and a hopeful timbre. Here are the two that get me the most. The first got me into Ritchie Havens, who I had forgotten all about. The second, from a young Jesse Jackson, is also great. It even makes me forget that Jesse kind of went off the rails later on. Enjoy:
